Planting vegetables on the windowsill in February – how to start?

Planting vegetables on the windowsill is a good way to have fresh and healthy vegetables at your fingertips. Despite appearances, it is not so difficult. How to prepare a vegetable seedling at home? We suggest when and with which vegetables to start your own cultivation.
What is a seedling?
Seedling is a method of growing vegetables that involves early sowing of plant seeds into containers designed for this purpose. Only after the seeds have germinated, usually after two months, is the seedling placed in the ground. This will speed up the flowering and yield of our vegetables.
Vegetable propagation on the parapet – when can you start?
You don't have to wait long before you start vegetable propagation in your home. You can do it as early as mid-February. On the other hand, the beginning of this month is a good time to store at a garden store, where you can stock up on seeds.
Vegetable propagation in the house – how to choose a place?
The optimal place for seedlings is a sunny windowsill, preferably on the south side. If you live in the countryside, the porch next to the house or a greenhouse with so-called seedlings will also be a good solution.

Vegetable propagation on the windowsill – what seeds can be sown in February?
In February in our seedling you can find seeds of some herbs: basil, marjoram or savory (you can plant them into the ground in the second half of May) and brassica vegetables: kohlrabi, cauliflower, artichoke, cabbage – Chinese, white and red. You can plant the listed brassica vegetables into the ground already in April. Remember, however, that the artichoke is an exception here – plant it only after May 15.
Vegetable propagation on the windowsill: what seeds to sow in March?
At the beginning of March we sow in seedlings: root celery, celery, spinach, carrots and radishes. In the second decade of March we can start growing from seedlings vegetables from the solanaceous family – tomatoes, peppers and eggplant. At the end of March it is worth starting to grow from seedlings: broccoli, onions, cauliflower, leek.
Vegetable propagation on the windowsill: what conditions?
Germinating seeds need the right temperature conditions, it is best to set them on the windowsill near the radiator. It's a good idea to control the temperature with a room thermometer: it should be the same before and after vegetable germination. The optimal growth temperature is 18-20°C.
Interesting fact: Instead of small pots or special seedpods, you can use egg pressings. In this way you will not only reuse the cardboard packaging, but most importantly there will be no need to remove the seedlings from the extrusions. Just tear them and directly put them into the soil.
Remember to water the seedlings regularly – the soil in the pots whose surface should be slightly moist, but not too wet. You can use a sprayer for this purpose. Sprinkling the seeds with water at room temperature promotes their growth.
Due to the dry air in apartments, it is worth taking care to cover the seedlings with, for example, breakfast paper with several holes. This simple procedure will retain moisture in the soil and guarantee proper airflow.
Hint: Sign the seedlings. Without this, after a while you will have a hard time recognizing what vegetable you are watering and where in the garden you need to plant it.
Advantages of growing from seedlings:
✅ The seeds will rise earlier, so you will harvest faster than in growing directly into the ground;
✅ it's easier to control weeds: the weeds rise earlier than the seedlings and often drown them out, not allowing the vegetables to develop properly. By growing in seedlings, it is much easier to distinguish them from the emerging plant.
✅ if too many young seedlings grow in one place, you can easily thin them out by pulling out the weaker ones and leaving the stronger specimens.
✅ in more you can influence how your vegetables develop – such control allows you to react at the right moment.

Fertilizing vegetables in the spring – BioGarden
After spring planting of vegetables on the plot, it is worth applyingnatural bacterial preparation. Microorganisms present in BioGarden are safe for the environment, as they support natural processes occurring in the soil and do not disturb the ecosystem. In addition, they replenish the soil with nutritious humus and enrich it with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. It is these minerals that are largely responsible for the growth of vegetables in the home garden.
