Immediately give up species that have high requirements – do not plant vegetables that develop an extensive root system and need a lot of space. Brassica plants, cucurbits (cucumber is an exception) and root crops are unlikely to do well as vegetables on the balcony.

What vegetables can be grown on the balcony?

Fortunately, today we have quite a large selection of dwarf varieties of plants edible plants that can be successfully grown in the house. What in this case can be grow on the balcony? Which of them will grow there?

Tomatoes on the balcony

In a balcony vegetable garden you can plant varieties of cherry tomatoes. Tomatoes on the balcony are relatively easy to grow, as long as they grow in a place well-sunny location. Also remember to protect the tomato shoots, tying them to a stake or balcony railing driven into the pot.

Cucumbers on the balcony

Cucumbers grown on the balcony are slightly more demanding than tomatoes. During sunny and warm days, cucumbers need a lot of water. If you do not take care of proper soil hydration, these vegetables will become bitter in taste. As with tomatoes, cucumbers on the balcony are worth supporting, tying their stems.

Peppers on the balcony

Another edible plant that likes lots of sun is peppers. With a little luck, when high temperatures persist, peppers will quickly will ripen. However, if the weather during the season is not favorable, the plant can be attacked by fungi.

In addition, in pots on the balcony will also work well: radish, lettuce (e.g. Arugula), chives, celery and parsley (grown for cuttings), onions.

Vegetables on the balcony – when to sow, how to sow?

Setting up a vegetable garden on the balcony looks similar to traditional cultivation. Most varieties of vegetables that are suitable for balcony cultivation are sown in March or April, but if you do not have the patience for this, you can simply buy ready-made seedlings in a garden store.

Planting vegetables in boxes or pots is done in late spring, when the seedlings are already ready. For this purpose, we choose such containers that have the suitable depth and size, so that vegetables can develop freely. The substrate for growing vegetables should be fertile (e.g. mixed with compost) and somewhat loose (sand will work here).

Vegetable garden on the balcony – care and fertilization.

As you can see, growing vegetables on the balcony is not so difficult. What you need to remember remember is that edible plants grown in containers need to be water regularly (preferably in the morning) and fertilize, preferably with liquid fertilizer natural. For this purpose, we can use the crop preparation BioGarden, which increases soil fertility and raises the content of phosphorus.

What vegetables on your balcony will you grow this year?
